The Costermonger, a Merchant & Mills pattern
The Costermonger is a classic market tote designed as a backpack. It’s a simple, satisfying project that uses little fabric - so it’s ideal for gifts or for using up leftovers in your stash.
The yellow samples were made up in Merchant & Mills’ Yellow Dry Oilskin, which can be found here. Their grey check fabric is called Prince of Wales check, which can be found here.
Fabric requirements (Note that the bag is unlined):
80 – 98cm wide – 0.95M
98 – 150cm wide 0.70M
You will need:
8 x 9mm rivets or Chicago screws
4 x 25mm/1″ metal sliders
2 x 25mm/1″ leather strap 89cm long (Note: If you are buying Merchant & Mills’ leather straps they come about 145cm long so you will need two.)

Suggested Fabrics:
Oilskin, dry oilskin, mid- to heavyweight cotton canvas or drill, mid-weight denim (8-14oz)
Finished measurements are 45cm long x 40cm wide.
